Recycling Center
Alternatives Recycling Center opened in July 1990 in accordance with an agreement between Madison County ARC (now Madison Cortland ARC) and Madison County. The Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) is located in the heart of New York State, approximately six miles southwest of Oneida on Buyea Road next to the Madison County Landfill.
The primary purpose of the Alternatives Recycling Center is to contribute to the betterment of the local environment as a result of the Solid Waste Act of 1989, which made recycling a law in New York State. Another main focus is to employ socio-economically disadvantaged and developmentally disabled individuals from the local community.
Alternatives Recycling Center receives its recyclable material from curbside collection by private haulers and from the transfer stations throughout Madison County. The recyclables are received at the MRF in a co-mingled fashion; fiber type on one side and mixed container on the other side. The materials are then sorted into specific categories per market specifications with any residue pulled out. The sorted recyclables are then inspected, baled and inventoried for market.
